Do Inversion Tables Work?

Eidolonai October 13, 2017

Do inversion tables work? Are inversion tables really an effective way to alleviate back pain.

An inversion table is a device used to perform inversion therapy. Inversion therapy is an old idea that has gone up and down in popularity over the years. Inversion therapy involves hanging by the ankles at an inverted angle or upside down in order to alleviate back pain.

Proponents of inversion therapy claim that the force of gravity pressing down on the body causes repeated pressure on the spine. This pressure causes the nerve roots and discs of the spine to become compressed, which can result in problems such as bulging discs, herniated discs, pinched nerves and sciatica. Inversion therapy is based on the premise that when a person is inverted it takes gravitational pressure off of the nerve roots and disks of the spine and increases the space between vertebra, and this alleviates back pain.

Inversion therapy proponents claim that it not only relieves back pain, but that it also improves posture, prevents the loss of height caused by the cumulative effect of gravity, increases flexibility, stimulates blood flow to the brain, and corrects minor misalignments of the spine.

The medical community has mixed views on how effective inversion therapy is for treating back pain. Some studies have shown inversion therapy to be an effective treatment for back pain, but most of the evidence supporting the effectiveness of inversion therapy is anecdotal. Many people have reported getting relief from back pain using inversion therapy.

Using an inversion table is not without risk. It can cause lightheadedness or dizziness, raise blood pressure, lower heart rate, and increase pressure in the eyes. If you’re pregnant or if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or any sort of eye disease (such as glaucoma), you should talk with your doctor before using an inversion table.

So, what’s the bottom line? Do inversion tables work? Well, like so many other forms of back pain treatment, inversion therapy will work for some people and it won’t work for others. There is no one form of back pain treatment that will work for evryone all of the time. The only way to know if inversion therapy will work for you is to give it a try.
