There is hardly a community left in the world without a Starbucks Coffee Company shop or kiosk nearby. Many people look forward to one of the company’s signature beverages and coffees on a daily basis and others enjoy the many baked goods they sell as well.

The Starbucks Coffee Company seems like a very modern creation, but it was in fact started back in the 1970s. At that time it was a single storefront in a city marketplace. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks Coffee Company shops around the world, and each is recognized as a place to get high-quality coffee and beverages.

The company’s original business focus was on selling freshly roasted beans and coffee roasting equipment. Based in Seattle, the company began to expand in the late 1980s, branching out into actual coffee service. Today, their highly trained and enthusiastic staff of “baristas” is well-known for brewing up specialty coffees to each of their customer’s very specific orders. For example, they will steam milk to the requested temperature, brew a particular strength of espresso, and give a drink an extra shot of syrup or caramel should the customer request it.

Interestingly, the Starbucks Coffee Company also is known for its corporate responsibility initiatives which consider the types of environmental impact the business will have in its every form. For instance, the coffee bean business is highly competitive and the company still persists in purchasing what is known as “fair trade” coffee beans though this means they pay far more than market prices. They also have massive recycling initiatives that provide coffee grounds to gardeners, limits the amount of water used in cleaning processes, and continually monitors shops for ways to save on energy and resource consumption.
